Re: Possible meteor storm, evening of May 30
Anyone planning to go out to ELO for this?
I would be interested if there are others interested.
Looks like the forecast is partly cloudy moving towards clear later.

Re: Virtual Grand Canyon Star Party
Last Saturday night's premier of the Grand Canyon Star Party was a huge success with over 800 viewers on our live event from all over the world. Tonight we continue the star party viewing objects in the constellations of Scorpius and Sagittarius. Lots of interesting nebulas, star clusters and a few ...

The Grand Canyon has announced the creation of the "Virtual" Grand Canyon Star Party. As most of you know the official Grand Canyon Star Party that was to be held at the Visitors Center on the South Rim from June 13th thru June 20th was cancelled due to Park Closure. As an alternative the ...

Re: First actual image of a black hole released
Last night attended a lecture by the UofAz team that was involved with the image. They were involved with the MMT and South Pole part of the imaging as well as the software involved with the number crunching. Each of the members got up and discussed their part in the event along with photos of the s...

Crab Pulsar
Ran into Dr. John Cocke, Co-discoverer of the Crab Pulsar, at a lecture at the UofA in Tucson. The discovery was done at Kitt Peak, just outside of Tucson, in 1969 after radio pulses were detected in the area of the Crab Nebula and he decided to look at the stars in the Crab for its optical counterp...

Re: Observing sites around Minneapolis
That one is better.
Thanks...…
PS - I noticed the data used is from 2006 so the levels have no doubt changed but it can still be used as a good relative reference.

Parish,
You may find this website useful.
It shows where the darker skies are located. Double-click to zoom in.
Perhaps you can find a campsite in one of the dark spots.

Re: Observing sites around Minneapolis
Parish, Welcome to the club. Since you are already on the South side of the city I would suggest you check out our Eagle lake Observatory. Directions can be found on the MAS website. It is just North of Norwood/Young America so less then an hour's drive for you. Skies can be quite dark there on good...

Dream job anyone?
The Catalina Sky Survey in Tucson Arizona is hiring.
See job announcement at:

I'm retired otherwise I would go after it myself.

Aurora Borealis
Last night there was a beautiful display of Aurora out at ELO. It started around midnight as a pillar in the Northwest, from the horizon to about 40 degrees altitude, followed by a 'picket fence' of streamers reaching up to almost the zenith above us. Mostly white in color. Lasted for about 30 minut...
