Re: Galaxy/Nebula Eyepiece for 10" f4.7 Dob

Does anyone have any good /bad experiences with buying used eye pieces on Astromart? I've never paid for AstroMart, but I've bought a dozen items off the CloudyNights classifieds and have never had an issue. Like Deane said, check feedback (and leave feedback if you buy something)and communicate wi...

Re: Mars Observations

I'd recommend using whichever scope has the better optics but all other things being equal the 6" should be better than the 4.5" most nights. I typically use an 8" dob on Mars but can usually see a difference between that and a smaller scope. As Deane mentions, medium power (~100x) is...

Re: Chinese Space Station Sightings Possile July 5 - July 11 from the Twin Ciitesn Cities.

Thanks for posting this. I saw it Wednesday night. Maybe a bit brighter than 2nd mag. Not as bright as Antares nearby. Tracked it in a 15" dob at ~75x. Could tell it had a length to it and wasn't a point but that was about it

The ever helpful Phil Plait did a column on this image with the asteroids a few years ago

Re: Starlink satellite train tonight 5/17/21 9:21 pm

I caught this Starlink train on Sunday night at 23:02 and caught it on a startrails picture I had setup From Top to Bottom where the trails start on the west (left) side of the image Top: 23:41 05/16/2021 ISS Pass One down from top: 00:43 Unknown but I think this is the Starlink train again One up f...

Re: What to use for Star Map

Maybe not all phones can do this... but I can also turn off the white "navigation" buttons. Turning off the nav buttons seems to be a Samsung feature (at least for now, see below). What's worse is that with my Android 10 phone I could use an app to hide the nav buttons. Google removed the...

Re: What to use for Star Map

Another +1 for Sky Safari on Android. I paid the $20 for the Pro version with the fainter stars and catalogs I went the opposite direction from Prabhakar, I was exclusively a paper map user (primarily Skyatlas 2000) up until a couple of years ago. I still starhop everything, but starhopping using Sk...

Re: Table Set Up

I made a cover for my table based on the plans at the DewBuster site. https://www.dewbuster.com/dewshield-laptop.html It's better than nothing but I get dew under it on moderate to bad nights. If you're running a computer it'll work better as the computer puts out some heat to keep the dew away. Inc...

That's great Kris

I love how moonlight pictures look like daylight... the moon really is reflected sunlight :)

Oh, and I have to laugh at the red flashlights with the moon lighting the field looking like it's as bright as day.

Re: SpaceX Starlink

Birds was my first thought Suresh. I've seen birds from the cities moving like that illuminated by the light pollution. Then I thought it was a plane towing something and finally realized what it was when I put the finder on my scope on them. I missed them on the 1:45ish pass, from your description ...

SpaceX Starlink

Got very lucky and saw the SpaceX Starlink satellites just after midnight Saturday morning from home in Brooklyn Center. Long line of satellites moving along from NW to NE. They passed north about 00:08. They were brighter than expected, probably around first magnitude. They went somewhat below Pola...
