Re: Big Bang? Quantum equation predicts universe has no begi
There seems to be a certain amount of scientific arrogance when it comes to requiring that mathematical singularities always need to be explained, here by evermore extravagant beginnings. Despite the great successes of mathematics in so many ways it is worth keeping in mind that its origins stem fro...

John Krawczak is registered for NNSF. I didn't originally sign up for the tour but would like to now for the 2:00 tour. It does not appear possible to amend my LL registration online.

Got some looks from my home in Minnetonka around 1000 local. I got some images, too, and have posted one on the Imaging SIG.

It seems as though for most exoplanets discovered so far the geosync orbit would intersect the host star.

Too bad amateur radio astro is such a fruitless endeavor. It could sure provide winter observing opportunities without the suffering.
But there is always arXiv.org for ponderment.

There is an Aussie outfit - one of their U's - that offers an online MS in APhys. I checked into it and it is around $20k and two years.

Re: U of Minn Telescope Disappears en route to Texas
Thanks for the pointer to the story. I don't read the papers. That is the EBEX unit for exploring polarization anisotropies in the CMB. I actually worked on that project and that instrument at the U for awhile not long after I retired from my real job. A couple of years ago a MAS member gave a MAS m...

Re: The Late Sky & Telescope
I am in some kind of loop for the ST Digital: I log in but am not recognized, then am offered a new pw by email which never shows up. I am sure I could call them, but that's no fun. There is no shortage of quality astro reading material these days, anyhow. For e.g., I check ARXIV.org astrophys daily...

There are at least two astro clubs in the Phoenix area: Sagurao and East Valley. I have observed with the Saguaro club on occasion at their dark sky site just south of Phoenix. Too bad but that is now closed because of human and drug smuggling corridors. Now they go to a place to the west, about hal...

Re: Was the Space Shuttle worth it?
I do believe that the Shuttle was worth the money and the risks involved. Most ambitious projects like that have many unknowns and the people that put their lives on the line when humans are involved accept the dangers. It does require a national effort and that is more than just the engineers. I am...

Re: Northern Nights Star Fest Aug 24-27
Last year I signed up by the deadline, only to determine nearer the event that it would likely be a washout, which it was pretty much, I guess. So, I didn't bother to make the trip and lost my entry fee but at least didn't waste a lot of time on hope for miraculous clearing. Why can't the arrangemen...

It isn't only the mosquitos but it is also what they might be packing. Since deadly diseases have found a home in the crop I only wear long clothes in a risky setting. That would include a hooded jacket and gloves, no matter the heat index. Then 100% DEET on any remaining skin exposed seems to be su...

Re: Steven Hawking on Space Alien Invasion?
Most so-called sightings, at least at night, seem to suggest that their spacecraft have lights on. Do they really need landing lights if they actually have the technology to get from there to here? Maybe they could just peel out a rope with knots to estimate the distance to the ground. Clearly, any ...
