FYI, if you are on the calendar grid and click/tap the entry, it doesn’t take you to the above page.

Undaunted: The Forgotten Giants of the Allegheny Observatory

Jackie LaVaque sent me the link to this excellent doc on the Allegheny Observatory and the various titans of astronomy associated with it, including John Brashear.

That was really fun! Only a few clouds. We got to view through the 16”, which did a great job on Saturn and Jupiter. We also got to gawk at the 8” but not through it. It’s really cool watching the mechanical drive on the 16” do its thing. They really do a nice job maintaining that scope.

Re: 2023 ELO Public Star Party Schedule

Hi, for the Oct 14th annular eclipse event, does "cancelled on cloudy sky" mean cloudy-locally or if this is "simulcast" from some other location? Please advise, thanks! The event at ELO is canceled. There is no virtual version. You can probably find a stream of the eclipse onli...

Amazing is right, and an understatement! Those protoplanetary disc images in particular really drive home the impact Webb is having. It’s hard to believe those images are real. Kinda like when you show people Saturn for the first time :D

The largest optical telescope that will ever be built?

Tom Scott has done a lot of interesting YouTube videos on a variety of topics, but he’s outdone himself this time. He visited the ELT (Extremely Large Telescope) under construction in Chile, and did a very comprehensive and fascinating 1/2 hour video on it. The scale of this thing is awe inspiring. ...

Even if there is no scheduled event, members can go to ELO and stay as late as they want. I think I will be there, as long as the weather holds.

Re: Telescope Winter Use

Here's a beginners question. I attempted to look up the answer my self, but ran into some conflicting suggestions (who would have thought?) so I figured it's best to ask here. To use a scope on my outside deck (NexStar 4SE in my case), outside temp 10 degrees f, inside temp 75 degrees f. Move it ou...

Glad to hear things went well, Antone. I wonder if your depth perception has been affected at all? I didn’t have to worry about that as I didn’t have any to begin with, lol.

probably one of the earliest starts to the fire/smoke season I can remember. For those of you who have been observing for a while, does it seem that this is getting to be a bigger problem the last few years? seems like we used to only have a few days a year that would be smoky enough to notice, lat...

Smoke, again :(

I was just checking the satellite imagery and noticed something gray and ominous. There are huge fires in Alberta and BC, and some of the smoke is already drifting over Minnesota.

Here’s the thread John mentioned:

The gates at Baylor don’t close until 10:00. This seems promising enough that I am planning to go out to ELO about 10. I will plan to leave the gate open. Remember, only members are allowed in the park after 10.
