I have the laser for it and the xt10 dob. SHould I be using the spider vane screws on the outside of the tube or do I use the hex screws for the mirror itself, or both? I can't seem to get it in both the ring on the mirror and where it belongs on the laser target thingy at the eyepeice. DO I need to...

messier cert requirements
I was wondering what the guidelines for this is? Do you need to draw them? I am curious because it looks as though I might actualy get to CG for this weekend and might use the oppertunity to bang off some M's I missed last summer at jeffers. Additionally, can the raw logs be retyped? Watch it get cl...

Re: astronomy in the winter
atleast once a winter I will set up the telescope in my driveway for some observing in -15 or more weather. Dead calm, very clear, good for the bandds of jupiter, splitting saturns rings, mars or anything else you want to use extremely high mag on, like the moon. I find I can go to the limit of my s...

Re: Solar Power Satellites Threaten Astronomy
wouldn't it be easier just to buidl powerlines to the desert and put tons of arrays there, rather than trying to lift all that crap into space (ok...maybe cheap russian rockets could do it) but I still would think the desert would be cheaper. Plus if they have the tech to convert microwave to electr...

Re: Bye-bye, Betelgeuse?
Betelgeuse has shrunk by 15 percent in the last 15 years and may be about to go supernova. See http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,525695,00.html . Orion will never be the same. On the other hand, we may be about to witness the mother of all spectacular astronomy events and the birth of a fascinati...

Re: What say we lose the handles?
True, however if they are keyholders they would have had to fill out a form would they not? so you already have their contact info...have them add their forum name..it;s alot more secure then hoping the person you are letting in there is who they say they are. some clever person could claim they are...

Re: Space Garage
there's going to chuck the ISS that quick? Now that's a waste. Thing should be expanded and used for the lunar and mars missions. At any rate, I had suggested using using an ion drive satalite to collect space junk. An orbit could be calculated where the space junk could either be recovered or relea...

Every time I come here I need to login even if I check the box to stay logged in. After logging in, I need to do it again for chat. Can that be fixed? ALl my other forums stay logged in for months at a time. I have their tabs open by default when I open the browser. But when this one opens, I always...

can the top level of the message board be the firstest left? Most forums do except ours and it's really annoying because if I forget and click it anyways I get the mas main page instead of the forum index.

is the mag of lulin a bit exaggerated?
I've seen 4.8 listed, but even with the moons glare it ought to be obvious in bino's, and I was out at 1a, march 9th (so this morning) and Gemeni (or atleast the 2 starts making it's head) should have been the fairly bright pair I saw making a nearly horizontal line. Given that, sweeping toward the ...

It seems like a waste to de-orbit a satellite so that it burns up in the atmosphere. I wonder if would be possible to cannibalize it for mass to fuel the ion drive for the trip to the next target. No, the capture satellite would deorbit the debris. Once the debris are on track to burn up in a few o...

I've been tempted to write to google and tell them the next x-prise ought to go to a team which can develope a solar ion drive sat that can intercept and collect objects tracked as space debris, and either de-orbit them or devlier to the ISS for return on the shuttle. ALl you'd need is a renewable p...
