The Astronomers

Hi folks! I am looking for a digital version of the 1991 PBS series "The Astronomers". Is there such a thing priced reasonably? I have seen DVD versions available on Amazon for around $300.00 and up. YouTube has short clips, but not the series. I found the series inspiring and would love t...

The Onan Observatory will be open this evening for viewing, sky conditions permitting.

Re: Can't Upload Photos to the Forum

I see that this happened about a year ago also. Apparently Craig had to increase the overall attachment size to accommodate more photos.

Can't Upload Photos to the Forum

I noticed tonight that the Forums will not accept uploads - "attachment quota exceeded" or something like that. Just FYI.

Re: Direct hit on Venus

Mike Conley showed a remarkable video of a high altitude plane flying across the sun during the Venus transit and intersecting Venus itself! Is this video posted anywhere? Thor, Mike shot the video through a TEC 140 I had set up out at Onan. Currently I have the 200+ MB .avi file in my DropBox and ...

Re: I need a list of telescope stores in minnesota

Radio City doesn't stock nearly what they used to during the hay day of local astronomy stores, but if we buy from them with more frequency maybe they would. I am of a mind lately to support the local astronomy store when possible!

Alvan Clark

Jackie and I drove to Northwoods 2011 for an afternoon primarily to visit with old friends. Sure enough Gerry Kocken out of Green Bay was there with his refurbished 10" Alvan Clark. It is a beauty. I was hoping to look through it, but as night approached so did the mosquitos, dew, and...rain, b...

I think that this and other hard to "nail" objects would be great challenges for the gear at Onan. As far as me being "The Law" at Onan that is not the case at all. We have a committee of individuals that works hard to make sound rules, and I am just a cranky cog in the wheel tha...

Sirius B

Being a novice observer I was interested in recent chatter on the TEC User Group e-mail list regarding the difficulty of seeing Sirius B through the eyepiece. I have never seen this difficult companion star. Anybody seen Sirius B? Here is a link describing techniques for spotting it? Sounds like a t...

That O'Meara Guy

I was watching a National Geographic special about the moon tonight - very interesting. Steve O'Meara and his wife Donna were featured in it, not as astronomers but as volcanologists - I had no idea. They have done studies on how the moon affects eruptions on a particular volcano. So when the guy is...

I will agree with Jackie that the announcers on Slacker Astronomy can get on the nerves, but then I find myself drawn to quiet tones, mild food and a glass of milk before bed too. Dulcet radio voices may be a thing of the past. A good podcast for those cloudy nights though. Not sure if David Levy's ...

Dave S,

Yeah, I have done this a few times over the years to mine. Bring it by some time and we can perform the necessary surgery, or contact me via e-mail and we can go over how to do it. It isn't that hard to do.

Regards,

Dave O.

Jackie has a pretty cool collection of ancient coins. I particularly like the Greek coins, as the designs and artistic nature of them is superior to the Roman coins. Some of the coins in her collection look like they fell out of someone's pocket just yesterday - they look like new. I find it amazing...
