Re: December AL Reflector mentions MAS in President's Letter

Nice column! I certainly didn’t expect to see my picture in the Reflector. Sorry if they made it look like I (though unnamed) was responsible for your cool Observe the Moon demonstrations, Steve :)

Remember, there will be a special Mars Opposition star party at ELO on Saturday December 3rd if it’s not clouded out.

Re: Farewell to Ottewell's Astronomical Calendar

I received the hard copy version a few days ago. It's not quite the same as the "large" version Ottewell produced for many years, but its still pretty cool. It's such a unique product. I missed it when he wasn't producing them for a few years. Suresh How big is it now? I thought I heard i...

A great way to get familiar with telescopes is to borrow from the loaner program. It’s free for members.

Yup. The current version of Slack requires iOS 14 which can’t be installed on iPhone 6.

Re: Posting & Message Response Issues

I am also rocking an iPhone 6 and the web site does have issues displaying in Safari. There’s a LOT of extra white space, and I also cannot get the main page dropdown menu to show up.

Re: Posting & Message Response Issues

On your second point, I know I have gotten confused once or twice about how PMs work. When you send someone a PM, it sits in YOUR outbox until they read it. If you looked quickly you might have thought it was a new message in your inbox.

Re: Mars Observations

Observing is always a good decision :) We were looking at Mars in the 8” TMB at ELO Saturday night. It was my first view of this opposition season. The seeing was ok to decent, but Mars was still at fairly low elevation. At 180x you could see lighter orange areas and dark markings, but it was hard t...

Re: Mars Observations

Yes, you probably want an eyepiece in the 10-12mm range for nice medium powers in those scopes.

Re: Mars Observations

You don't say what the aperture of your telescope is, but ice caps (or just the one that is biggest at the moment) are typically visible. Usually some darker features like Syrtis Major. You do need some good seeing and lack of dust storms on Mars. You can use Sky and Telescope's Mars profiler to hel...

Betelgeuse recovering after blowing its top

Remember that weird dimming that Betelgeuse went through in 2019?

Re: website issues....

On the topic of images. It seems the size restrictions are rather draconian, for both images in posts, as well as avatars. Also, there are forums where images are not allowed at all and I don’t understand why.

You can tell if you’re logged in easily by looking in the upper right corner. Your login name would be there, next to “Notifications” and “Private messages”. But if there was an edit option for your post, then you were probably logged in. Hmm…. I have found that every time I go to the forums I have ...

Re: collimation question

If it’s good in the center, it should be good anywhere in the field, barring any inherent flaws in the optical design or manufacturing. For example, some telescope designs have some inherent coma, like you might see in a fast (f/5 or shorter) Dob (which is where coma correctors come in handy). And s...

Re: collimation question

When you make collimation adjustments, the target star will typically move out of the view (whether by eye or camera - I’ve never tried with a camera). Then you have to re-center it and make your next adjustment. Assuming your finder was originally aimed at the same place as the main scope, it will ...

Hello! I am super new to attending events with MAS. Can I bring a guest with me if they are not a member? We might not do camping, but just attend events one of the days. Thanks! Anybody can attend, member or not. However, this is a paid event. If you are camping, then call the Carver County Parks ...

Re: 15th annual Camping with the Stars

Hi! My family and I are one of the ballfield campers. Do you know if they allow fires at all? I assume not, but wanted to check. Are we ok to use a small propane grill? Any other restrictions/tips/tricks I should know? (This is our first time at this event--but not our first time at the observatory...
