Re: Bill Volna article

Upon further review, couldn't have been the planetarium, built in 1960. Seems there were 6 possible Minneapolis libraries built prior to 1940's Bill could have been at. Might just have to ask him directly. As far as I know, this also pre-dates any local astronomy club I can find, certainly the TCAC ...

Re: Bill Volna article

The article starts off by saying Bill attended a Minnesota Astronomical Society lecture when he was in middle school. If he is 91, it's hard to believe he was still in middle school when our club became the Twin Cities Astronomy Club. Clearly he attended an astronomy club lecture, but what was the ...

Re: 15th annual Camping with the Stars

One of the MAS members at the star party last Saturday night has tested positive for covid. This member arrived at the observatory about 7:00 and was operating a telescope in the main observatory. It’s recommended you test and quarantine per Minnesota and CDC guidelines. Please forward to others in ...

Re: 15th annual Camping with the Stars

Note that we had a speaker presentation change as Collin will be doing the rocket building at 2:00 on Saturday.

Also note that the cookout this year will be at the "Prairie" picnic shelter (west of the ball field), and not the shelter by the lake.

The reply from the park is "Yes, but the grill size is to be small, “table-top” sized."

Re: 15th annual Camping with the Stars

Anybody can attend, member or not. However, this is a paid event. If you are camping, then call the Carver County Parks number and make a camping reservation. They will take payment and you will get your event packet, including door prize tickets when you check in at the campground office on arriva...

Re: 15th annual Camping with the Stars

Hi! My family and I are one of the ballfield campers. Do you know if they allow fires at all? I believe they have had campfire rings set out on the field in the past, but speaking from experience, a campfire and observing with telescopes when trying to maintain dark adaption do not mix. But check w...

Re: New member helpful guide

One astronomers opinion: First: I am sure newbies to stargazing and MAS would like to take advantage of the loaner program. Question is which telescope or binocular? I'd start with one of the 8" dob scopes. Easy to use for first timer. Eventually using others, as variety of scopes will help de...

Something rare to see... not from here

This Saturday Venus will pass Jupiter for a close telescopic conjunction. The two will pass within 14 arc minutes of each other. A few days before this, Venus will pass Neptune. This conjunction has Venus passing Neptune within 13 arc seconds to the limb of Venus (Venus itself is 17 arc seconds). Th...
