Goodsell Observatory Tour (UPDATED)

Post by mlfj4901 »

Greetings,

I've been talking with a Joel from the Goodsell Observatory at Carleton College regarding a BSIG tour, and was hoping to get a rough head count or at least an interest level on who would be interested in attending.

Nothing solid yet as far as when, Joel said he'd contact me later this week. If you're intereted here's the place to let it be known.

This by the way is not to be confused with the Eisenhower Observatory outing that Ron hosted last spring. An encore outing is in the works for October or possibly November.

-matt

******UPDATE*****************************

Monday November 7th beginning at 8pm Joel Weisberg will be taking us around Goodsell. If you plan on attending please either send me a pm, post here, or email me before Wednesday November 2nd. Joel can take 15 for sure, any more than that and he'll need to find a student to help out. Check back here later for where we'll meet at the college so no one gets lost.

Goodsell worth the trip.

Post by Ron Schmit »

Hi, Folks:

Just wanted to throw in a comment to help with your decision... Goodsell is well worth the trip. The observatory is cool (especially if you like the old stuff) and they even have the transit scope still in place. Although the view is not that tremendous through the big scope (chromatic aberration), it's a great place to see what an astronomer's workplace looks like and get some stories of days of yore.

Actually cooler than the telescope, is their collection of meteorites. Make sure you include some time to go check them out. They are in a circular display case around the pier below the dome. VERY cool stuff!!

That would be Joel Weinberg. (As an alumnus of this esteemed institution, I get to pick nits ad infinitum!)

Yes, the refractor is impressive looking, though not necessarily impressive FOR looking.

Definitely a cool place. The Transit telescope was used as an official time keeping instrument for much of the railway industry for a number of years.

And Carleton had another, even earlier, observatory, which was torn down when the "new" one was built.

Greetings,

Still waiting to hear back from Joel. I'm sure he's a busy guy with school back in session, but I sent him another email in case he was so busy we slipped his mind.

This is a REALLY cool place. It's like stepping back in time, like something out of a Jules Verne novel. I went there a couple of years ago and would love to go again.

John,

Only if you share.

On second thought, never mind. You can have it all.

Carleton (with an 'e') is *** IN**** Northfield. Your first clue will be the huge smokestack with a big "C" on it. Campus starts at the intersection of 2nd Ave and Division St. Mind the construction. Also, there's a nice arboretum suitable for hiking. And a decent bookstore. And don't miss the giant wind turbine!!

If anyone is heading down to Goodsell and would like to take on another rider, I would like to join you. I will help pay for gas.

Greetings,

Here are directions to Carelton College for those in need: http://apps.carleton.edu/visitors/travel_car/

Here is a campus map: https://apps.carleton.edu/global_stock/ ... /44573.gif

If you follow the directions from the large map, you will enter the
small map on second st near lower left.

Park near the last (easternmost) block of first st and walk north
thru campus.

Look forward to seeing eveyone there.

By the way new BSIG people - I think observatory tours are a great thing to do. I missed all of these and would love to get to any nearby observatories. It's a great way to fire up us beginners!

Goodsell is a great place-- I will have to check and see when the next public night will be held, and maybe we can coordinate a visit.
