Newbie to astronomy

Post by Optimus »

Hi guys,
I'm happy to be part of this community. I'm new to astronomy. I bought my first telescope yesterday, Friday January 20th 2012. It's a used one, but it works fine. Just needs some collimating. I would like to be a member of the Minnesota Astronomical Society. The only thing, is I can be available only on weekends (Friday and Saturday) as I work night shift.

My best regards to all of you.
Optimus.

Hi Optimus,
Glad to hear you want to join. Being able to participate only on weekends is no problem. You'll miss out on the monthly membership meetings, but most everything else occurs on weekends. With a wide range of potential activities MAS members can partake in, you can still do a lot even if limited to just weekends when you're not working in the evening. I'd estimate that only about 15% of the entire MAS membership (around 30-35 people of over 425 members) comes to any given monthly meeting. Star parties are scheduled on Friday nights, but when Friday is clouded out, Saturday evening is the alternate date anyway. LLCC star parties are usually called for the whole weekend, so even if you can come up for Saturday night, you can get in a good night observing there. Also, Onan Public Observing nights are on Saturday nights, and all our B-SIG meetings are on Saturdays.
