Perseid Meteor Party 2016

Post by clayton »

August 11 9pm to 5am August 12.
Eagle Lake Observatory

Join us for special impromptu public meteor watching party away from city lights hosted by MAS volunteers. The highlight is the the Perseid Meteor Shower that may deliver a meteor once a minute or so during the dark morning skies. The best time too view will be after that moon sets at 12:30am and prior to the morning twilight starting at around 4:18am. Fewer will be seen earlier as the Moon’s light interferes and the shower radiant is low on the horizon, however a few are usually visible. Read more at the American Meteor Society. Bring your own lawn chair , blanket, water and bug spray.

This event will be CANCELLED IF CLOUDY, so check the MAS Discussion Forum or the MAS home page for possible updates.

Note: The Observatory buildings are not guaranteed to be open due to staffing constraints however a brief session in the first couple of hours may be possible for early visitors.

For information on the Eagle Lake Observatory including directions, visit the ELO Observatory webpage.

OK. Sorry, folks. It's just not happening.

Here is the chart for 1:00. Storms to the south are going to keep us cloudy (dark gray.) It MIGHT clear by 3:00, but we're not going to hang around for 6 hours, waiting for that to happen.

Tonight's Public Perseid Party is canceled.

Try Metcalf tomorrow night. Should be better weather and still pretty good activity.

Impressions of the 11-12 August Perseids being shared via Facebook:

Koen Miskotte: “Brilliant Perseid outburst. 15 fireballs between [magnitude] –4 and –8. Three –8. Two peaks around 23:15 and possibly at 2:15 UT. Observed about 600 – 900 meteors. I don’t know. Maybe more…. We had unexpected very clear weather with limiting magnitude up to 6.8. Man man man what a show. The best one since 2001. . . .”

Casper ter Kuile: “Perhaps we did not observe such a nice fireball show but activity was much higher than expected. The first peak we acknowledge but as the radiant was quite low at the sky on La Palma this was not well defined. The second was much more obvious but if we can narrow it to 02h15m UT. But this is all very preliminary.”

Mariusz Wisniewski: “Perseids! Within minutes I could see even 7 meteors! We have seen very many bright meteors.”

Jure Atanackov: “Huuuge Perseid outburst observed!!! Rates the best since Leonid storm in 2002!!! Wow!!!!!”

Rosie Backes: "Now THAT's what I call a shower!!"
