November BSIG - Nov. 18th - Metcalf Nature Center

Post by Sureshks »

Hi all,

The November BSIG will be on Friday November 18th, weather permitting, at the Metcalf Nature Center.

With Central Standard time starting on Sunday Nov. 6th, sunset will be around 4:40pm on the 18th.

So let's plan on meeting up at 5:30pm that night.

The directions to Metcalf are included here: http://www.mnastro.org/facilities/metcalf/

This event is highly weather dependent, and if there is snow on the ground by then or if it's too cold or too windy we'll may have to make a late decision to cancel.

So please send me an e-mail (sureshks1@msn.com) if you are interested in coming out so I can keep you updated... I will plan on making a go/no go decision by 3pm on the 18th.

It would be great if we could get a some MAS volunteers to come out that night to assist. Please send me an email if you are available to volunteer.

The volunteer duties are:

1) Get there by 5:30pm to let people in to the observing field (direct those with telescopes or other equipment to park on the right (north side), those without on the left (south)).

2) Bring a telescope and show people objects around the sky.

3) Help people who bring their own telescopes with any technical issues that they may have, or show them how to set up and use their equipment.

Recent BSIG events have had as many as 40-60 attendees. With the cooler temps we might not have quite as many this time... but it's certainly possible!

The 76% lit waning gibbous Moon will rise around 9:15pm on the 18th. So we will most likely go till 10pm or 11pm if the weather cooperates...

If it is cloudy or too cold on the 18th, we won't have a back up night... since the final public night of the year at ELO will be on Saturday Nov. 19th.

Please bring extra clothes and a warm beverage to help you make it thru the evening!!!

Let's hope this nice warmer than usual weather holds up for a few more weeks!!!

Best regards,

Hi everybody,

Sadly, I'm going to go ahead and cancel our planned Friday night BSIG event at Metcalf Nature Center.

The weather forecast is calling for rain, and possibly snow... followed by howling winds later in the evening.

The good news is the final 2016 public viewing night at ELO is this Saturday night (11/19), and the weather forecast calls for clear skies!!

So brave the 25F-30F temps expected that night and come join us there!!
