Alan Bean, moon-walking astronaut and artist, dies aged 86

Post by Ron Schmit »

I had the great pleasure of meeting Capt. Bean just two years ago. He was an amazing man and true gentleman. He really seemed to be the Yin to Conrad's Yang. If you watch the Apollo footage, i think you will find Bean to be one of the most expressive of the astronauts. He seemed to be having a blast on the Moon.

His paintings have an added depth, as they come from a very personal and unique experience limited to only 12 humans. If Armstrong was the star, Aldrin the Brains, and Young the heart, Bean would have been the soul of Apollo.

Watched this over the weekend: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFSa6vUix70

It's the approach and landing footage for Apollo 12. Listening to the astronauts' chatter, I can imagine how many times they went through the script in the simulator, repeating the same commands over and over, but now,it was the real deal, working exactly as planned. What a thrill!
