OK you slackers -- fire it up, here's the link:
http://www.nasa.gov/externalflash/apollo11_radio
Thinking back to the actual event, I fondly recall lying on the living room carpet, my face almost pressed against the TV screen at every 'special report' or nightly news broadcast, closely following the mission. This, and the daily newspaper were my information sources.
Now, here I am, listening to streaming audio over my pocket-sized tablet computer, watching the STS-127 press conference on NASA TV, checking Twitter for astronaut 'tweets' , scanning RSS feeds for NASA updates, marveling at external tank and SRB videos of the launch, and, checking Heavens-Above.com to determine observing opportunities for the shuttle and the station.
How things have changed in the 40 years since Apollo 11!

They made it down! "Tranquility Base here, the Eagle has landed!" .... oh, that was 40 years ago. But it was just as exciting hearing it in "real time" as it was when I was a kid!

Re: Geek check -- Apollo 11 realtime audio
It has been interesting to hear it 'real time' and unedited. Helped me put things into perspective and pick up on nuances that I hadn't thought of before (like the steady reduction in speed after leaving Earth orbit as the craft climbed out of our 'gravity well' and gradually speeding up once the Moon's gravity took priority).SEmert wrote:They made it down! Of course, after listened to it almost every waking moment take a guess when I lost the audio tonight -- right after Armstrong announced he was 'on the porch'! ARRRRRGH . Picked up again just before Aldrin descended.
Oh, Nixon's about to speak -- gotta go!

They seem to be out of sync...
Although the LEM should be in intercept pursuit of Columbia, they are already covering the docking.
That's an hour ahead of time.
Oops!! They've just played the same audio twice in 30 minutes... Covering the docking again. Come on fellas!! It ain't over 'til you're bobbing in the ocean!!

Re: Geek check -- Apollo 11 realtime audio
Just stumbled across this forum post.
It reminded me of the Apollo 17 real time project that was completed a few years ago. Here is the link if anyone wants to check it out.
Scraped from the home page:
"The Last Mission to the Moon
A real-time journey through the Apollo 17 mission.
Over 300 hours of audio | Over 22 hours of video | Over 4,200 photos
Relive every moment as it occurred in 1972."

Maybe they’ll do the Apollo 11 one again next summer.
