Description: Martian microbes, alien viruses, & oceanic life under icy planetary surfaces … speculation of how life may appear in non-terrestrial environments has been a science fiction staple for years. Join a discussion on this trope with specialists in science & science fiction.

Short descriptions for panelists in the webinar are shown below:

Dr. Kate Adamala is an Assistant Professor in the College of Biological Sciences at the University of Minnesota. Her research at Adamala Lab specializes in the study of synthetic cells, with applications in basic research, biomanufacturing, medicine and space exploration.

Dr. Jon Durmin is a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) working in Iowa. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature and a DVM degree from the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Aaron Engelhart is an Assistant Professor in the College of Biological Sciences at the University of Minnesota. His research specializes on ways to engineer RNA-based tools to probe and manipulate biological systems.

Dr. Laura Okagaki-Vraspir is a Senior Technical Writer at Medtronic in the Twin Cities. She received her PhD in Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology from the University of Minnesota.

Mr. Tyler A. Young is a science fiction writer living in the Twin Cities whose stories have appeared in Nature, Daily Science Fiction, Gamut, and other magazines.

The moderator for this webinar is Mr. Michael Winikoff, the Director for the Science Communication Lab at the University of Minnesota. He is also the founder of the Science Is a Visual Medium speaker series, focusing on the intersection between science, art, and design.
