Presentation: The Search for Antarctic Meteorites: A Scientific Travelogue - Tues. Feb. 27th - 6:30pm CT

Post by Sureshks »

Hi all,

A friend at the Minnesota Geological Society forwarded me a notice of an upcoming presentation by the Rochester (NY) Academy of Science Mineral Section lecture entitled "The Search for Antarctic Meteorites: A Scientific Travelogue". I thought I'd forward the invite, in case any other MAS were interested...

Date: Tuesday, February 27th
Time: 6:30pm CT (virtual meeting will be open by 6:15pm CT)

Presenter: Dr. Christian Schrader of Potsdam College

Presentation Abstract:

The Antarctic Search for Meteorites (ANSMET) program has been active since 1976 and has collected over 23,000 specimens. Dr. Schrader participated in the 2011-12 season with eight other scientists and will share his experiences participating in Antarctic research. He'll summarize the history and purpose of the ANSMET program and cover the importance of meteoritics to our understanding of the Solar System. Through this, he will recount several studies that have used Antarctic samples to illuminate planetary evolution, and how meteoritics supports extraterrestrial missions that utilize rovers and remote sensing.

About the Presenter:

Christian Schrader graduated from the University of Alaska Fairbanks with a B.S. in Geology. He then received his M.S. in ore deposit geology and his Ph.D. in igneous petrology, both from the University of Georgia. He worked with NASA on lunar exploration and migrated into a NASA postdoctoral position, during which he served on the Mars Exploration Rover Science Team and began working on volcanic rocks from both Mars and Earth. He is currently an Assistant Professor at SUNY-Potsdam.
