Post by Deane Clark »

The camera of the LSST/Vera Rubin Observatory is done!
I didn’t realize anyone made lenses this big any more.

This project is utterly amazing. Imaging about half of the sky to 24th magnitude every three nights! There's a great article about it in the June Sky & Telescope.
30-inch homemade Newtonian with periscope
20-inch homemade equatorial Newtonian with periscope
14-inch homemade equatorial Newtonian
10-inch Newtonian that folds flat
6-inch Russian Maksutov-Newtonian on Vixen equatorial mount
Too many small scopes and binoculars to mention

Unfortunately I wasn't able to see the telescope when I was there in Dec '22 because the observatory was still under construction. But I did get to visit the control room. It's an amazing place.
