Forum Notifications

Post by sandconp »

When I first joined MAS, I signed up to monitor certain forums and I would get emails for any kind of new forum activity.

A few weeks ago, I stopped getting these email notifications and I did not change anything in my settings . The only way to see the notifications now is I have to sign in and click on the ‘bell’ near the top of the page.

Is anybody else having this problem?

I receive notifications. Others can confirm if they are receiving notifications. Check your spam filter to be sure your email client is not filtering them.

Note for each forum you have subscribe manually. That’s a lot of clicking, you have too check each one.

However we have had periods when the forum seemed not to send notifications as expected.

Clayton,

I checked my user profile and I am subscribed to six different forums and I have always gotten updates up until few weeks ago. I double checked and I am subscribed to all of the six forums and I added a new one today for the Help Forum. I also checked my spam folder and nothing is in there.

So for now since I can get the email notifcations, I just log into MAS and I can see at the top of the page so I can see all the notifications for the forums I am subscribed too. The emails are nice since I usually don't go in to MAS to see the forum updates unless I get an email plus I can click on the link and go right to the topic

I would be interesting if anybody else is having this recent issue.

Looks like I am not getting notifications either. I have over 40 when I just signed in and no emails on them.

I think I can shed some light on this.

You will only get one e-mail notice for each forum you are subscribed to until you visit the forum again. So let's say you are subscribed to "Observing SIG". You will get an e-mail for the first new topic created within Observing SIG since you were last logged in. If new topics are created in that forum, and you haven't yet logged in to view them since the last e-mail, you will not get further e-mail notifications.

Likewise, topics (a.k.a. threads) work the same way. You will get an e-mail if there is a new post since the last time you viewed the topic while logged in. If you haven't viewed the thread, and there are more posts since the one that triggered the e-mail, you will not get further e-mail notifications.

This functionality works forum by forum and topic by topic. So you can be actively reading new topics under "Observing SIG" and not actively reading new topics under "Outreach". In this case, you will probably stop getting e-mails for "Outreach", but continue to get e-mails for "Observing SIG".

An easy way to keep getting e-mails, is to make sure you don't have unread notifications when you are logged into the forums. This appears to keep everything working correctly for me.

The e-mail notifications actually explain this in fewer words. "No more notifications will be sent until you visit the topic" or "no more
notifications will be sent until you visit the forum." It means exactly what it says. :)

Thanks Kris. I knew that, but I didn’t think about it when this topic came up.

I just got two notifications for the same thread two minutes apart without having looked at the forum in between.
