Possible meteor outburst evening of November 21

Post by Deane Clark »

There is a prediction that the Alpha Monocerotids which peak tonight, may have a brief, intense outburst that could exceed 400/hr ZHR. See:
https://www.skyandtelescope.com/astrono ... ocerotids/

I plan to head out to ELO at about 10 pm.
The researchers think the outburst will be CENTERED on 04:50 UTC (10:50 pm CST), but they recommend starting to look by 04:15, which is 10:15 pm CST. Monoceros will be rising in the ESE around the time of the outburst. See the map in the S&T article.

Hi all,

Initial reports stated that there was no outburst on Thursday night. However, later a video was published online by a meteor watch group in Canada. The video clearly shows a brief burst of meteors, and then follows it up with the brilliant train from SpaceX's most recent launch of Starlink satellites.

I cannot find that video now. Has anyone else seen it? If so, can you post it here?

Thx!

Hi Mark,

Yep, that's the one. Thanks for posting it!

Sure looks like there was a burst of Monocerotids around midnight ET.
