Starlink Satellite Observation

Post by petemn2004 »

Tonight I witnessed the passage of quite a few Starlink satellites from the third launch.

I could see at least five satellites at one time like white bulbs on a taught Christmas light string. Maybe 8 to 10 degrees apart.

I am guessing they were about magnitude 2, judging from nearby stars. This was about 6:00 PM. Sunset was 5:01 PM.

From Heavens-Above for a few of these:

18 January Starlink BH 2.6 (mag) 17:56:31 10° SW 17:59:23 74° SE 18:01:27 17° ENE
18 January Starlink AZ 2.6 (mag) 17:56:43 10° SW 17:59:35 74° SE 18:01:39 17° ENE
18 January Starlink BG 2.6 (mag) 17:56:57 10° SW 17:59:48 75° SE 18:01:51 17° ENE
Orbit: 342 x 343 km, 53.0° (Epoch: 18 January).

This is near it stated final altitude of 350 km.
To me this does not bode well as there will be thousands in orbit when the satellite constellation is complete.
Space X is experimenting by having one of these satellite on this launch with a black coating.
