Stellarium Question - Remove DSO Nicknames **SOLVED**

Post by Ron Schmit »

Hey all:

Any Stellarium users out there? In one of my installs (0.16.1), when I push the DSO button, markers come up and that's great, and all, but it is also putting up these long nicknames that I don't need. Is there a way to put up JUST the symbol and not, "Summer Beehive Cluster", "Blue Horsehead Nebula", and "January Salt-and-Pepper Cluster". Good grief!

Hi Ron,

1) Go to the left pane and select Sky and Viewing Options Window.
2) Go to the DSO tab
3) On the lower right you'll see Use additional names of DSO checked
4) Keep this checked. See the labels slider above it. Slide that slowly to the left. You'll notice the names going away, but keeping the symbol on the screen.

Suresh:

What build do you have? My DSO tab does not have a "Use additional names of DSO" checkbox on it.

However, I DID find a check box that says "use designations for screen labels" and that got me from the ridiculous "January Salt-and-Pepper Cluster" garbage to the proper "M37" in a jiffy. THAT's what I'm looking for.

Nice!

Thanks for your help!!

Hi Ron,

I have the latest one 0.19.3. I downloaded it in March. It's nicer than the previous versions, and even has telescope control built-in.

I suggest you upgrade. It's free!

OK, that makes sense, and yeah, I should upgrade, but I'm currently in a precarious position, computer wise. Running all these old machines during quarantine and I don't want to mess with what's working until I'm back at work and have options. Had a laptop that was allowing me to do PowerPoints until one night when it updated and now it won't. Oh sure, they're done with XP... Doesn't mean that I am, does it? Well..., yeah..., I guess it does. <sigh>

Thanks for your help, buddy! You got me to the solution!
