Anyone headed south for the total soar eclipse?

Post by Ron Schmit »

Curious if anyone is headed south for the eclipse on Monday, Dec 14, 7:53 am to 12:53 pm CST. It's running through Argentina and Chile. I've been looking around for coverage and all the typical players are passing with COVID restrictions in place. What a shame.

Any MAS'ers making the trek?

Boy, even the streaming options are few.

NASA is out.

Nothing from the Adler.

Exploratorium: "To keep our staff, our colleagues, and our communities safe during this coronavirus pandemic, the Exploratorium won’t be sending a team to Chile to cover the December 14, 2020 solar eclipse as planned."

These are the only few that I found:

Got a note, this morning, from the NASA team:
Just got a last minute live stream for Monday's eclipse: https://www.nasa.gov/nasalive/ Note that the weather forecast looks just awful, though... So best of luck to everyone watching for the eclipse.

Ooo... Sorry, kids.

Currently, eclipse equipment at NASA's site includes umbrellas.

Oh my goodness... This has just been SAD! The coverage has been so very thin.

NASA's (yes, NASA's) live shot is an unfiltered view of the Sun! What the heck! This is NOT totality. It's so over exposed, it's actually blowing out the Sun.

The saddest shot was the webcam view of Fred Espenak, Mr. Eclipse, watching it from home. Goodness, 2020 just sucks.

Chile was pretty much clouded out but Argentina fared much better.

A lot of the hardcore folks that chase total solar eclipses no matter where they occur were prevented from going because of travel restriction caused by the virus.

NASA's feed was from the top of a volcano in Chile. The view during totality was no bueno.

I saw some nice beads and prominences on the date and time feed. A guy in Japan and a Lady in Norway. They were OK. They were switching from about 4 or 5 locations including the same NASA feed which was cloudy. I am unsure why we needed to see the clouds. Still not the same as being there.

Probably the best shot of the 2020 eclipse that I've seen, thus far. NICE prominence at 2:00!

Too bad there are not many out there. I think, probably, because most of the great eclipse photographers were at home watching it on Zoom.
