I know many in the hobby found this book to be outstanding. Terence Dickinson is releasing an all new version this fall.

Re: New version coming of: The Backyard Astronomer
This was, and is still, my favorite book for Beginners to intermediate. I learned so much from his first edition when I was new to the hobby. I even stole his description (I think he coined the phrase!) of many of us amateurs which is still how I describe myself: Recreational Astronomer!
There is information of value to long timers as well, and I am sure there is more in this 4th edition. I can't see how anyone would be disappointed reading this book.
Kurt
PS: No, I don't get any kickbacks for this!

I like to use the “recreational astronomer” title too, but I didn’t get it from the book. I heard Kurt say it once at ELO.
