Hubble telescope having stubborn computer problems

Post by Deane Clark »

It’s not dead yet, but they don’t know what’s wrong even after 10 days.

Did they try unplugging it and plugging it back in?

I bet they would, but probably fear it wouldn’t come back on!

They are having issues with the payload computer. This is the same functional assembly that caused a substantial delay with the last servicing mission.

At that time they resurrected a spare payload computer assebly and fully tested it before the mission. The old one was pulled out of the telescope and replaced.

The payload computer has dual CPUs and multiple memory components and troubleshooting is taking place. This was 1980s technology.

Only if he plugged in the backup Power Control Unit :)

Sometimes tapping the side with a big shoe helps.
