Forest Fire Season Has Started

Post by Sureshks »

Hi all,

The 2022 summer forest fire season has started early again, and smoke is already starting to show up in our skies (see the purple in this map from Astrospheric).

This smoke is coming from the Calf Canyon and Cerro Pelado wildfires in New Mexico. In total there are 600 fires presently burning in Arizona and New Mexico. Last year's strong monsoon create a lot of greenery in the region that has now dried out. That biomass is now ripe for burning. And high winds are fanning the flames, particularly in New Mexico.

Scientists say that higher temperatures due to climate change are melting winter snows earlier, turning these areas into potential fire zones earlier each year.

Ugh! Last year the smoke ruined the Nebraska Star Party for me. I wonder if eventually enough trees will burn to reduce the fire seasons.
