Hi everybody!

The final virtual B-SIG presentation of the 2022-23 Winter season will be on Saturday March 11th, starting at 1:00pm.

Ahmed Reda, MAS Board Member At-Large, will be presenting "The Golden Age of Medieval Islamic Astronomy".

Synopsis:

"Have you ever wondered why most of the visible star names are Arabic ones? How Arabic astronomical concepts like the Azimuth or the Astrolabe came to be key ones in medieval astronomy?

While most people are familiar with the Ancient Greek or Renaissance astronomy, most people don’t recognize the vast contributions of the Islamic civilization to astronomy for a millennia. This presentation will touch on some of the aspects of medieval Islamic astronomy, how it preserved the ancient knowledge, and leading a golden age of astronomy.
"

Ahmed is very active in the MAS. Aside from serving on the current Board, he is in charge of booking guest speakers for the MAS monthly meetings, and also frequently helps out at ELO events. We are excited to learn more about Islamic contributions to the science of Astronomy!

We will be open up this link about 10 minutes before the event starts.

Hello all,

That really was an amazing presentation by Ahmed Reda on Islamic contributions to Astronomy. In total, we had 38 people on the Zoom call.

A recording of this presentation is now available for viewing on the MAS YouTube Channel. You can watch it here:

You can also view other recordings on this channel here:

The next MAS Beginner's Group event is scheduled for Sat. April 29th, back at Metcalf Field. This is our first scheduled outdoor observing session of the year. Of course, it all depends on whether the snow has melted and the field has dried out.

More to come as we get closer...
