Smoke, again :(

Post by Deane Clark »

I was just checking the satellite imagery and noticed something gray and ominous. There are huge fires in Alberta and BC, and some of the smoke is already drifting over Minnesota.

probably one of the earliest starts to the fire/smoke season I can remember. For those of you who have been observing for a while, does it seem that this is getting to be a bigger problem the last few years? seems like we used to only have a few days a year that would be smoky enough to notice, lately it seems like its several weeks at a time. I don't know if its the drought out west or changes in forest management- or both? as if we don't have enough cloudy nights already-

It’s definitely worse than it was several years ago, although we had a bit of a reprieve last year. When we get a lot of smoke, it’s usually blowing down from Canada. Western Canada has seen plenty of heat and drought lately too.

So I just heard a report on MPR that the frequency of air quality alerts has doubled in the last 10 years.

A Star and Tribune article today states this may be an on again /off again issue throughout the summer.

This spring has been terrible for observing and now the smoke.
