SUCH a disappointment to see the New Horizons coverage this morning. Instead of covering the event, they covered the coverage.
Mission PI, Alan Stern, addressed the crowd. Other team members and dignitaries addressed the crowd. Even the children of Clyde Tombaugh addressed the crowd. Oh, but we got to see none of that. Instead, we had to hop over to the (now apparently obligatory) "social media guru", appearing on camera while staring at a computer screen, and telling us, "there are currently a LOT of people on the internet."
...
...
wow.
Such a historic moment, and it played out like watching Dick Clark's Rocking New Years Eve... "Oh, I wish you could be here folks. The excitement is just palpable." Well, if you let us SEE the excitement happening, maybe we could learn that for ourselves.
I know, I sound like a retiree, but the coverage is NOT the story: the STORY is the story. When you take time off from coverage to tell us that there are a lot of people watching, it's like tuning in to see a ballgame, and all you see is a shot of the guys in the booth as they marvel about the size of the crowd. PLEASE can we get our eyes back on the ball?!
sigh.

I thought I'd be bummed being here at NSP and missing the coverage.
Now I think it's maybe not so bad to miss the "coverage coverage."
