Aaaaarrrrgh!!!!

Post by rbubany »

This week I am moving from Bloomington to our retirement home on Lake Washington.

This has beautiful dark skies and I have been looking forward to living there for some time.

Now, look what our neighbors did last week....

Greetings,

Have you thought about asking them to turn it off once in awhile? Make sure when you ask that you're holding either something really sharp, have a wristband from a local mental facility, and a shirt that says "Guns don't kill people I do."

Personally I'd just shut down power via some high voltage thing that could kill me. Or there has to be a power cord somewhere!

It's not just light pollution. It's downright guady and ugly.

Like living next to Six Flags or Valley Fair, poorly done.

Ron,

This is outrageous! I would invite them over to look through your telescope (when their lights are on) and then after showing them a washed out image casually mention the effects of light pollution. If they're nice folks, this might do the trick. They can come back and see how much better it looks.

It worked with my neighbors at least (until they moved!) Now I have to teach another set.

I'll be working on it. Maybe I'll wear my "nutter" wrist band at the same time.

I think I need one.

Now they have added a huge rubber slide that stands about 10 feet high on the water. You climb up one side and slide down the other.

It's OK, but I am afraid they will find a way to put lights on it.

Woe is me!

So THAT's how slides work...no wonder I was so frustrated as a child!

Hey, I know a lighting contractor who is great at flooding acres at a time with bright, even lighting!

OK Mike - funny guy

This is no ordinary slide. If you looked at it and no one told you what it was you wouldn't have a clue.

I was so excited to figure out what the !@#@# thing was that I felt compelled to explain how it works.

Woe woe woe...

My neighbors on the other side are complaining because the lights shine right through our windows and on into their den.

Greetings,

If you're going to suggest curtains you might want to explain how they work.

See Ron, you hang these sheets of fabric from rods or poles above your window. They hang down and impede any distracting photons from entering your domicile. If your neighbors were to hang these sheets of fabric, curtains, then the stray light might not bother them as much.

Good point, Matt.

Also, Ron, they make things called "blinds." Now, tempting as it may be, this does not imply spearing the neighbor's eyes, but rather horizontal slats (in some cases vertical, see also "Levolor") which can be rotated opened or closed, or alternately raised as a group to allow the passage of photons, if, and when, desired.

Just a random thought about the curtains/blinds...

Has anyone ever been to Germany (maybe other parts of the world too) and seen the exterior window coverings on rollers? They are raised and lowere with a strap on the inside of the house. I prefer total darkness to sleep and man(!) these work great! They certainly don't let in light. And by the armored look of them, I don't think they let in any other type of radiation either.

So how this relates...if I were you I would sneak over there on one of these worthless cloudy nights, erect a frame around their lighthouse beacon starter kit, and install these German über blinds. Try www.obi.de to get them.
